Spaghetti Dinner Hosted by El Carmelo PTA

Organized by Trevor and Sarah Cornwell

Event Report by Sarah

On Saturday, August 23rd, we started off the new school year with the PTA’s Back-to-School Spaghetti Dinner. Students and their families met and enjoyed spaghetti and bread. The catering was again handled by Buca di Beppo to let everyone focus on the conversation and less sweating over a hot stove.

We’re guessing about 185 people came this year. For the first time, we held the entire event outside the MP room, in the courtyard. The weather was wonderful and it made for a very nice evening.

This was the third year that Trevor and I chaired the Spaghetti Dinner. We’re looking forward to hosting next year’s spaghetti dinner the first weekend of school and hope to have Terry and Greg Anderson co-chairing again, after their year away.

Thank you very much to the volunteers who helped serve and who helped clean up: Hong Shen, Kay Eron, Sophia Skinner, Kavitha Ponnuswamy (and Anish!), Jianglin Zhou, Kevin Zhou, Bruce Woodley, Maria Derrick (and Leah!), Lucinda Brommersma, Rachel Cooley, Hannah Lee, James Lee, and Jonas Lamis.

Fall Scholastic Book Fair

Organized by Kate Karagueuzian Gibbons and Maria Derrick

Event Report by Kate

The Scholastic Book Fair was held September 15-19th in the MP Room at El Carmelo. It was wonderful to see so many students thrilled with the fair and excited about picking out new books. Maria and I recommended many quality books at class visits and were delighted to see kids eager to purchase and read them. More families than ever before attended Tuesday evening’s milk, cookies, and story time event. For the first time, the PTA paired the evening hours of the book fair with the fall class picnics, much to our families’ enjoyment. Kids from grades K-5 were treated to stories in the library read by El Carmelo alum, Maggie Schmit, beloved teacher Nan Knoblauch, now retired, and current wonderful teachers Katie Rutledge and Heather Stone.

We could not have succeeded in our efforts to raise money for the library and to put new books in our students’ hands without the support, advice, time, muscle, and enthusiasm of many, many volunteers. Thank you to Junko Brierley-Green, Alison Chao, Carolina Dias, Julia Jacobsen, Sripriya Kannan, Minjo Kim, Susy Kim, Kanako Murakami, Robyn Reiss, Victoriya Rufanova, Tais Schmitt, Berit Schulz, Lana Solovieva, Sharon Tobias, Jen Wiener, and Hong Ye.

We owe a special thank you to Nan Knoblauch, Katie Rutledge, Heather Stone, and Maggie Schmit for reading at our evening event. As always, thanks are due to Leslie Bell, Chuck Merritt, Jennifer Fernandez, Ginny Nagao, Rickey Moore, and Jerry Phok for cheerful support before, during, and after the fair.

Ice Skating Party Hosted by El Carmelo PTA

Organized by Annie Chen, Barbara Hirsch and Peggy Hu

Event report by Barbara

On Friday, October 24, 2014 from 5:30 to 7:30pm at Winter Lodge, 247 skaters enjoyed an evening of fun with their friends and families. This annual private party is a wonderful tradition for the El Carmelo community. Ice cream, cake, hot cocoa and other treats provided by the PTA were served throughout the evening. Pizza was available for purchase from Round Table pizza. This event would not have been possible without our many volunteers. A big thank you to Kaumudi Bhawe, Lillandt Durosinmi Petra, James Eron, Signe Forsdahl, Melanie Gurunathan, Hong Shen and Jen Shen.
